Hedgehogs are rather unusual creatures. There are about 17 species of hedgehogs in the world. They are cunning and clever predators that willingly feed on mushrooms, berries,
worms, insects. With a body length of 20-30 centimeters, hedgehogs have rather small ears - less than 3.5 centimeters. Inside the hedgehogs' needles are hollow - they
filled with only air. The bodies of young hedgehogs protect from predators about 3,000 needles, adults up to 6,000 needles. Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals that are not
love to go far from their home. They jealously guard their territory from their relatives. The area of the plot of male hedgehogs is from 7 to 40 hectares,
in females - from 6 to 10 hectares. Hedgehogs shed constantly. It takes from a year to a year and a half to grow a new needle. On average, a hedgehog replaces every third
a needle on your body. Under natural conditions, hedgehogs live a maximum of 5 years, and at home or in a zoo - up to 10 years. Hedgehogs are rather agile animals.
They can run up to 3 meters per second. Since they are active at night, poor eyesight are compensated for by their excellent sense of smell and hearing. Over the summer, every hedgehog
must store at least 500 grams of fat, otherwise during hibernation in winter, animals will starve to death. Hedgehogs are solitary animals that
arrange nests close to each other, but try not to intersect with other adults. At the age of one month, hedgehogs leave
parental nest and begin to live independently. These animals appeared on Earth about 15 million years ago. In a situation of danger
they have the ability to curl up into a ball. Communication of these animals takes place with the help of a whistle. The eyes of newborns hedgehog open only for
16th day. Hedgehogs are afraid of water, but they know how to swim.
