Achiga (Micropterus salmoides) or largemouth bass is a freshwater fish originating from southern Canada and the northern United States of America, which was introduced to Europe at the end of the 19th century and to South America at the beginning of the 20th century. Successfully acclimatized in Croatia, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Japan and Cyprus. It is a predator that feeds on small fish, insects, larvae, frogs, crayfish and other creatures living in his domain. Micropterus salmoides prefers clear and calm water, but also adapts well to different conditions and can be found in rivers and even in mangroves in brackish water channels. It can reach over 10 kg, but the size is directly related to the environment. In reservoirs, he tries to hide in deep bays, under cliffs, logs, stones. Juveniles choose shallow water. During spawning, the male builds a trough-shaped depression in the ground on his site up to 1 m in size. Both parents take care of eggs and fry. This fish can withstand temperatures between 3 and 40 ° C, but is ideal the range for their development is from 18 to 27 ° C.

Achiga (Micropterus salmoides) or largemouth bass was first introduced to Portugal in 1898 at Lagoa das Sete Cidades in the Azores. It was introduced to the continent in 1952 and adapted well, quickly spreading throughout all hydrographic basins, especially in the south of the Tagus River. In Portugal, despite the fact that many consider them a delicacy, largemouth perch has become the object of protection and respect from sports anglers, it is protected by the closed season, and its fishing is prohibited since March 15 until May 15, with a few exceptions. Internationally, it is one of the main freshwater sports fish. Micropterus salmoides is probably the most popular an object of sports fishing in the New World, and recently it has been rapidly gaining fans in Europe. In Japan, perhaps, he already won a complete victory. A rare species of fish can boast of the fact that there are anglers who specialize exclusively in catching it. And he won it with an exceptional fighting character, thanks to which a great sporting interest in this fish was formed. In 1967, 34-year-old Ray Scott of Alabama founded the Perch Fishing Society, or BASS. First world championship in 1971 gathered only 24 participants, and the winner - Bobby Murray - took home 10 thousand dollars. Today the main prize of the championship is $ 200 thousand, the global potential of the "bass" industry is estimated at almost $ 100 billion. About 20 thousand official competitions are held annually. In BASS includes representatives of 56 states. And since serious money is spinning, environmental issues are resolved quickly: water quality, deforestation stops near water bodies, water bodies are stocked, sometimes whole ecosystems are artificially created for the prosperity of the perch industry.
