Faro is the gateway to the Algarve region of Portugal. If you are going to visit the Algarve in the south of Portugal, you will probably be driving through the city of Faro. This ancient city of Portugal has been literally rebuilt from ruins - Romanesque and Moorish. It survived the terrible earthquake of 1755, after which it was revived, and today it is proudly called one of the best resorts in the world. Faro is served by all trains from Lisbon and intercity buses from both Portugal and the neighboring south of Spain. First of all, here you will find an international airport that serves the entire region. From the 12th century, when Portugal gained independence, Faro developed further. And it is from the time between the XII-XIX centuries that you will find the most interesting monuments here. Besides the cathedral, there are several other churches, historic walls, town hall and palaces. The local swamps, located between the city of Faro and its beaches, are also unique. They mix fresh water with salt water and are home to many species of water birds. Flocks of flamingos can often be seen here. In the swamp, you can go for a boat ride; there is also a seasonal water taxi to the main beach. The first proven settlement here was founded by the old Phoenicians in the 4th century BC. Then in Faro, the dominance of the Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and the Moorish Empire alternated. All this time, the city belonged to the most important centers not only of the Algarve region, but of the entire southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Perhaps the most interesting is St. Mary's Cathedral, the square in front of it and the surrounding historic streets. The Lapidarium and the Museum of Archeology are definitely worth a visit, which is also dedicated to this rich history. The Episcopal Palace is a striking monument of Portuguese architecture. The blue flag beach is located in the Formosa delta on the sandy Ancao peninsula and is divided into two parts, the main (equipped) beach and the eastern (wild) beach, which is located at the mouth of Mar Santo (Esteiro do Mar Santo). The excellent infrastructure of the beach makes it possible to spend the whole day there without going anywhere. The picture will be complemented by planes that land at Faro airport, located nearby. There are many pleasant restaurants in the village on the island. The beach has all the necessary infrastructure for recreation, even small hotels. There is a surfing school in the village. We recommend taking a ferry ride from Faro for an unforgettable experience. In the 14th century, Faro flourished as a result of the successful trade in salt and a variety of products from local farmers. The Romanesque walls of the 9th century and the old part of the city surrounded by them with houses covered with flexible tiles attract special attention of tourists. More than a dozen churches and chapels have survived, which contain true treasures.
