People began to fish at the dawn of human civilization. The oldest fishing hook found by archaeologists is about forty-two thousand years old. River perch is the most common species in all freshwater bodies. The average weight of a perch ranges from 400 g to 3 kg. The average size of perch is usually no more than 30-45 cm. In natural conditions, these fish are hunted by larger predatory fish, otters, herons and humans. The teeth of the perch are quite large and are arranged in several rows in the large mouth, and some species have canines. For a comfortable living of freshwater species of perch, it is desirable to have a weak current, medium depths and underwater vegetation, in which the "hunting grounds" are located. These fish lead an active lifestyle around the clock. Under normal conditions, they gather in small flocks, can live in high-mountain lakes and at a depth of 150 m. crustaceans, molluscs, insect larvae and eggs from other fish. Small perches emerging from eggs settle to the bottom, where they eat small crustaceans and insects. By the middle of summer, the grown individuals move closer to the coast, where small fish become their food. The perch becomes sexually mature when it reaches 2-3 years. These predators move to the spawning grounds, having gathered in large flocks. Spawning takes place in shallow water in rivers or reservoirs with weak currents. The eggs fertilized by the male are fixed on underwater snags, flooded branches or roots of coastal vegetation. The clutch resembles a lace ribbon, which is up to a meter long and contains 700-800 thousand eggs. The fry appear in 20-25 days.
