Carvoeiro is a small but boring former fishing town located five kilometers east of Portimao, with picturesque sandy beaches, cozy coves hidden behind cliffs and
hospitable population. In just a few decades, Carvoeiro has transformed into a major tourist destination. There are many unique natural and historical sites that will impress even skeptical tourists. Praia do Carvoeiro is a real city beach, located just behind the central square of the village of the same name, surrounded by white houses, terraces descending directly onto the sand and famous for its original cliffs. The tourist infrastructure has long been adjacent to traditional way: bright fishing boats, which in the morning unload the catch for local cafes, and during the day they take tourists to numerous surrounding caves. The coastline between Carvoeiro Beach and Praia dos Caneiros is a series of secluded sandy coves, accessible at low tide and only from the sea. The high cliff bordering the beach from the east is crowned with the restored walls of the Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao fort, from which austere church with the image of the patron saint of the city of the 17th century. The most interesting rock formations are Algar Seco and Benagil Cave. The first is located near Carvoeiro and can be easily reached by a wooden boardwalk leading from the Nossa fort wall.
