Silves is a quiet town located in the south of the Algarve. Today the capital of the region is Faro, and before that the most important city of the Algarve was Silves. It is still considered one of the oldest cities in Portugal. You can reach Silves by car, bus, train and even boat from the nearby town of Portimão. Silves Castle is the most striking landmark of the city. It was built during the Moorish rule of the Algarve. Today, this castle is considered to be the best preserved of all other castles in the region. The castle's dark red stone walls rise above the city on a hill and immediately attract the attention of tourists. The castle's architecture contrasts with the maze of whitewashed houses and cobbled streets leading to the river. From the castle of Silves, the road leads to the Cathedral of Silves, one of the few ancient monuments of Gothic architecture in the Algarve. If you go down the hill, you will see a number of cafes and restaurants with an open a terrace from where you can enjoy the river view and admire the Roman bridge. There are many other interesting attractions in Silves including the Archaeological Museum, Cruz de Portugal, and the municipal market. Armacao de Pera beaches are just 20 minutes from the city, so you can easily combine your visit with a pleasant swim in the Atlantic waves. In the north, Silves is surrounded by mountain valleys that border the Alentejo region. These valleys are home to two charming villages worth visiting - San Marcos da Serra and San Bartolomeu de Messines. Wine lovers can also visit the vineyards Silves and taste some of the finest wines produced in the Algarve. In August, Silves organizes a medieval fair. A street procession with jugglers, dancers, acrobats and snake charmers dressed in medieval clothing recreates the era of the Christian Reconquista and is one of the largest summer festivals in the Algarve, attracting tourists from all over the world to Silves.
