The hoopoe is a very elegant bird. This bird cannot be confused with any other, it is so unique. The brightly colored bird has a characteristic crest on its head, which it can fan out. The ends of the tuft are black, and it seems that there are sharp arrows on the head. The bird has black wings and tail with white wide stripes, and the main color of the hoopoe is ocher-red. The bird is small: body length up to 30 cm, and weight about 80 grams. The beak reaches a length of up to 5 cm. Strong legs have blunt claws. The wingspan is 46cm. These birds are native to Africa, but in the process of evolution they spread to Asia and southern Europe. Hoopoes live in open areas with not often found shrubs and trees. Preference is given to forest-steppe and steppe zones, forest edges, small groves. They do not like a damp climate. They breed offspring once a year. In a clutch there are 4 to 9 eggs, the number depends on the location of the bird and the climate. One testicle weighs about 5 grams, and its color is varied: white, yellow, greenish, blue and even brown. The diet of the hoopoe consists of various kinds of insects, which it finds on the ground, in trees and catches on the fly. Larvae, spiders, beetles, grasshoppers, worms, caterpillars and even snails are eaten. Hoopoes are active in the daytime and spend this time in search of food to feed themselves and their offspring. They are monogamous birds and live in male-female pairs all their lives, huddling in small flocks just for the wintering flight. The average lifespan of a hoopoe is about eight years. This representative of the Raksha-like order is quite an ancient bird, mention of him is found in ancient scriptures, including such as the Bible and the Koran.
