embroidered on towels and tablecloths. The cockerel figurine is made of clay, ceramics and porcelain. Tourists are happy to buy these souvenirs,
although many do not know why it is considered a symbol of Portugal.
In the north of Portugal there is a town of Barcelos, where in the distant centuries an old legend was born about a rooster that saved a man's life and became
a symbol of justice. During the Middle Ages, a group of pilgrims moved on foot towards Santiago de Compostela. They had to spend the night
in the small town of Barcelos. At the inn, one of the pilgrims liked the mistress of the house. The woman began to provide a young man from Galicia
unequivocal signs of attention, but the young pilgrim refused her, and she decided to take revenge on him, accusing him of theft. Insidious woman threw in things
young men cutlery made of silver, and immediately reported missing. The young man's room was searched, evidence was found, then the pilgrim was seized and
dragged to the judge. By coincidence, there was a festive dinner in the house of the city judge, where, among other things, a roast rooster was served.
The judge began to conduct interrogation right at the set table, accused the pilgrim of theft, but the young man denied everything. The judge ordered to immediately hang
him and he replied to the judge that even a roast cock is more fair than he. Then he added that this dish in the hands of the judge would sing when he was executed,
and people will be convinced of his innocence. At that moment, when a noose was already thrown around the neck of the suspect in theft, the cock on the table really
shouted. The judge rushed to the place of execution and managed to save the young man. This is how the legend of the black roasted rooster, a fair symbol of Portugal, was born.
Years later, the pilgrim returned to Barcelos and, in gratitude for his salvation, erected a huge statue of a rooster in the city. Since then, the cock is
a symbol of justice and a reminder that truth will always prevail.
